Oh God, you are the Holy one of Israel. You are powerful and mighty and have called us to be set apart - holy for You. Your Holiness not only stretches over evil but also leads us in knowledge, justice, mercy, goodness and love. Lord, your commands reveal your character and we praise you today and ask that you cleanse us and remake us into the image o your Son through the power of your Spirit.
God, would you begin today enlarging my territory in all areas of life to claim it for your glory Expand my borders and use my life to bring you honor and fame. Enlarge my influence in my workplace, my community, my home. May I bring you praise for all that you have done. Give me a deeper love for the lost and the broken of this world and grant me access to be used mightly for you.
Father God, we praise you for your love and faithfulness towards your children. We praise you for being a perfect, holy, trustworthy God that is bigger than all the evil we experience here on earth. We ask that you give us eyes to see when evil is before us, hearts to hate evil and the desire to flee from its presence. We ask that you would not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil and draw us closer to yourself. We ask for the long-expected Jesus to come quickly and make all things new. We ask these things His precious name. Amen. (by Beth Anne Baus)
- And when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House: Our Lord, accept from us, for You are the Hearing, the Knowing. Our Lord, make us submissive to You, (raise) from our offspring a nation submitting to You, show us our ways of devotion, and turn to us (mercifully), for You are the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful. Our Lord, raise up one of their own as a Messenger who shall recite Your communications to them, teach them the Book and the wisdom, and purify them, for You are the Mighty, the Wise. (2:127-29)
Christian and Islamic traditions consider it most appropriate to start a prayer by glorifying God. For Muslims, this is reflected in the first surah, which has to be recited throughout the five daily prescribed prayers: In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. All praise is due to God, Lord of the Worlds. The Compassionate, the Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. We serve You and implore You for help. Keep us on the right path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favors. Not (the path) of those who have earned Your Wrath or of those who go astray (1:1-7)
The first four verses praise, thank, and glorify God. The fifth one is either a statement or prayer to reach a certain quality. The last two are supplications. The Prophet told his Companions to start their prayers by praising God, and his own prayers were intertwined with glorifications of God. Many prayers reported in the Qur'an also start with praise of and thanks to God.
This is an interesting area, Egmont, which raises some uncomfortable truths. The process of collaboration between the the Netherlands and Nazi Germany actually predates the occupation of 1940; and I am thinking here specifically of joint action taken against refugees, some Jewish and others simply political dissidents. Co-operation against what was officially described as 'Marxist and Jewish elements' began as early as 1935 at the time of the plebiscite in the Saarland, which decided in favour of union with Germany, causing many to seek refuge in the Netherlands. Three days after the vote, Baron von Harinxma thoe Slooten, the attorney-general in Amsterdam, wrote to the Minister of Justice, on the instigation of the Gestapo, in the following chilling terms;
He raised his hand; it held a noon edition of The Bun. We had thought it best to drop the paragraph out of thelater ones. He would have continued, but something in a grey frock-coat roared and bounded on a bench opposite, and wavedanother Bun. It was Sir Thomas Ingell.
I saw the forest of hands raised to catch it, heard the roaring and stamping pass through hurricanes to full typhoon;heard the song, pinned down by the faithful double-basses as the bull-dog pins down the bellowing bull, overbear even those;till at last the curtain fell and Bat took me round to her dressing-room, where she lay spent after her seventh call. Stillthe song, through all those white-washed walls, shook the reinforced concrete of the Trefoil as steam pile-drivers shake theflanks of a dock. 59ce067264
